Why Yorkshire’s hot when it come to luvv!

Heathcliff and Cathy share a moment on the Yorkshire moors

Love is definitely in the air in the countdown to Valentine’s Day, and our team at Quest PR are passionate about sharing with you why our fantastic county is synonymous with romance.

Yorkshire’s rich settings have inspired a number of classic love affairs, and, as part of our celebrating Yorkshire series, we get our hankies out and reminisce about the Yorkshire-based relationships that are close to all our hearts.

Where else is the perfect setting for a tempestuous love affair than out on the ‘wiley and windy’ Yorkshire moors?

Acclaimed as one of the greatest love stories of all times and the basis for Kate Bush’s number one hit, Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights is a breathtaking tale of love and revenge between Cathy and Heathcliff set against a dark and brooding setting.

Another classic love story, inspired by God’s Own County is Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Stoker’s inspiration was fired up after staying in Whitby in 1890. Enamoured with the gothic ambience of the town which provided an atmospheric backdrop to the novel, he positions the lead character shipwrecked off the coast on his way to London. Whitby Abbey has since featured in a number of Dracula related films.

Yorkshire has also been the backdrop for scenes in the iconic film Robin Hood Prince of Thieves. The romantic and captivating folklore tale of outlaw hero Robin of Locksley and Maid Marion captured through Hollywood’s eyes still managed to retain some local features. For example, the fight between Robin and Little John was actually filmed at Aysgarth Falls in Wensleydale. The film may not have retained Robin’s local accent but at least it paid it small homage to his Yorkshire roots!

Finally not forgetting, one of the most heart warming love affairs of our time, the on-and-off relationship between Last of the Summer Wine’s Compo and Nora Batty. Besotted with his neighbour and her wrinkly tights, infatuated Compo was constantly scheming to win Nora’s affections. Some of us are still wondering whether his unrequited lust would ever be reciprocated!
